MADDOCK-L:
Introduction to
The MADDOCK (and variations) Mailing List

MADDOCK-L is a 'no-cost' email based forum for subscribers to discuss aspects of the
history, geography and genealogy
of a large and extensive surname group.

Discussions may pertain to such spellings as
MADDIC, MADDICK, MADDICKS, MADIX, MADDIX, MADDOX, MADDUX,
MADOC, MADDOCK, MADDOCKS,
MATOC, MATTOC, MATTOCK, MATTOCKS, etc.
and ""ALL"" of the many other derivative spelling variations
that have been recorded in documents over time and space.

We are a group of people who, like you, are interested in the genealogy, the history and the geography of the MADDOCK(S), MATTOCK(S), MADDIX, and MADDOX surnames and ""ALL"" of the many derivative spelling variations that have been recorded in documents over time and space.

MADDICK(S), MUTTOCK, MUDDOCK, MADDUX, and MADIX are only some of the more 'off-beat' spelling variations that have been encountered so far.

People with these surnames are generally considered to have old Gaelic origins, and are known to have dispersed throughout the western world since at least the mid 1600's.

Interestingly, some MADDOCKS and MUTTOCK people alive today in the UK and the US can trace their ancestry from MURDUCK roots in the late 1600's Chelmsford area of Essex County (England), just northeast of London.

This only serves to illustrate the extreme potential for spelling variations within any ancestral surname grouping, especially in earlier records where surname spelling was often phonetic, and was often transmuted by both the speaker's and the recorder's educational and cultural backgrounds.

The surname, in all of its variant forms, has appeared in English records for more than 800 years. People with these surnames have dispersed throughout the western world since at least the mid 1600's.

Discussion in this group will focus on *any* aspect that interests you, the subscriber, and may relate to:

  • individuals or family groups carrying one of these surnames or one of the many spelling variations,
  • conjectured origins of the various surname groupings,
  • the migration of the name,
  • patterns of spelling over time and place,
  • stories and anecdotes about the name,
  • your research into any aspect of the name,
  • queries you have about ancestral relationships,
  • lost persons,
  • announcements of research reports,
  • look-up requests / look-up offers,
  • pointers to more information,
  • Family Reunion announcements,
  • offers to buy/sell/trade reference materials and resources related to the focus of this List (and subject to the Policies outlined below), as surplused from your own private collection,
  • and so on....

You are invited and encouraged to participate actively.
Any discussions will depend on you to be an active participant and supporter of our collective interests.

Note: Only subscribers are permitted to post messages to MADDOCK-L
(This is a SPAM proofing requirement...... nothing personal!)

Archive Files containing copies of all previous postings to MADDOCK-L are available
but again, only to valid subscribers.
