The Paterson Awards are named in memory of William Paterson, a long serving member and director of the Kingston Horticultural Society, who died in 1984. Each year, members of the Society tour the city to select the best garden as seen from the street in each of the city's 12 electoral districts.
William was born in Dover, England, in September 1891, attended St Paul's School in London, and moved to Kingston with his mother and sisters in the first decade of the 20th century. His first home was on the lakeshore of the Wartman property, and he later moved his house (almost literally) to Sunny Acres Road. In his later years he operated Sunny Acres Nursery. (Those who knew him believed he would sell only to people he trusted to nurture them carefully!)
His name is perpetuated in the Wartman-Paterson Park on the lakeshore, and in the Paterson Rock Garden adjacent to the City greenhouses on Norman Rogers Drive, where he supervised the placement of the rocks in the last year or two of his long life.
May his gentle and gentlemanly soul rest in peace.
