Barlow Columbines
Barlow Columbines: These perennials with nodding blooms and tri-lobed
foliage add interest to any perennial border. I first grew the McKana
series (hybrids) from seed. They have large long spurred bi-coloured
blooms. I found in my clay soil they only lived about two years. I then
discovered the short spurred older varieties. These were very hardy and
grew easily from seed. Two years ago I purchased Norah Barlow. It has
double blooms with short spurs and is a unique red, pink and green
colour. There are a number of different Barlow columbines for sale. I
think they are worth considering. Columbines like good drainage and a
sunny or partially shaded location.
In the picture above Norah Barlow appears on the right
and a typical short spurred Columbine on the left.
